Welcome to English II!
The following is a brief description of the important information for this course.

I. Materials
Pencils/Pens                      Binder/Folder                          Laptop

Notebook or loose-leaf paper                                          My Perspective Workbooks (Volume 1 & 2)

II. Classroom Expectations

  1. Be respectful to ALL. Show respect to your classmates, your teacher, and yourself. Hands on your own belongings unless asking. BE KIND!

  2. Put forth your best effort. Always aim to LEARN and put quality ahead of 'just getting it done'. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated.

  3. Be prepared. Have all materials needed for class. Utilize a planner to stay organized.

  4. Follow directions. Listen to or read directions carefully. Be sure you understand what is being asked of you before you begin.

  5. Participate. Engage! If you have a question, ASK IT! Curiosity enhances learning and can make it more enjoyable. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

  6. Show responsibility. Own up to your mistakes; we all make them. Be honest and understanding. Accept consequences based on the actions you took to receive them. Ultimately, your experiences in this class, this school, and the world are based on your decisions.

  7. No cell phones or earbuds during class

  8. No food, but water bottles will be permitted due to impacts of COVID-19 on water fountain use

  9. No laptop out and open unless instructed to use

III. Discipline/Detention

I want to preface this section with the following: if you are having a bad day or something is going on that you feel is going to impact your attitude or interactions with myself or your peers, please talk to me. The moment you become my student I am here for you - ALWAYS!
That being said interruptions/distractions during class instruction and disrespect to students and teachers will not be tolerated. On the first offense, the student is warned and a counselor and parent are notified. On the second offense, the student is assigned detention in my room before or after school and a counselor and parent are notified. On the third offense, the student is referred to administrator. Class detention is held from 6:45-7:20 or 2:30-3:05. Failure to attend detention will result in a referral to an administrator. Rossview High School policy allows three tardies per semester per course. On the fourth tardy, the student is referred to an administrator. No exceptions.

Cheating/plagiarism will not be tolerated. Cheating is defined as giving OR receiving answers on ANY work. Plagiarism is copying material from a source and claiming it as one’s own work. If a student is found cheating or plagiarizing, in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, the student will be referred to an administrator and a counselor and parent are notified. An additional, alternative assignment will be given. Cheating and plagiarism can result in non-admittance to honor programs and clubs.

IV. Make-up work/Late work/Homework

When absent, you have as many days to make up work as you missed from school. If the work is not made up during that time, you will receive no credit for the assignment(s). It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to check with me and/or your peers to retrieve assignments. To ignore makeup work often results in a serious drop in a student’s grade. Late work is accepted for HALF CREDIT Homework should be ready to turn in at the beginning of class the day after it is assigned. If it is turned in after I collect it, it is considered late and is half credit.

V. Grades

You can count on a MINIMUM of 2 grades per week, though it will likely be more. Every assignment you complete will be graded. Having many grades will benefit you, as you will find that you can have a bad day or slip a little without destroying your average.

VI. Virtual Instruction

If you are enrolled as a virtual student OR in the event of virtual instruction for all, assignments and communication will be posted through Google Classroom and Remind. See below for codes. If you are accessing this syllabus on my website, see the Remind/Google tab for codes and instructions on joining.

VII. Parent/Guardian Conferences
I am happy to meet with parents or guardians. Please contact me by calling the office, sending an e-mail, or sending a message through Remind. I am available to meet afternoons after 2:30 or during 5th period.

I am looking forward to getting to know you. This will be a challenging year, but with hard work, kindness, patience, and perseverance, you will be successful – and I will be there for you every step of the way. I consider it a privilege and great responsibility to prepare you for the English II EOC, higher-level English courses, and your future beyond Rossview High School. You will be better prepared at the end of your sophomore year if you think of this course as one more rung in the ladder to your future. Always do your best, maintain your integrity, and ask questions. My job is to teach and support you, but ultimately, YOU will earn your grade in this course. Good luck!
